NSW Home Energy Saver: How to Get a $15,000 Interest-Free Loan for Solar & Battery

The NSW Government is now lending eligible homeowners up to $15,000 at 0% interest to install solar and battery storage. Here's how the Home Energy Saver scheme works, who qualifies, and how to get started.

If the upfront cost has been the main thing stopping you from going solar, the NSW Government has just removed it. In June 2026, the state launched the NSW Home Energy Saver scheme — part of the NSW Consumer Energy Strategy, backed by $238.9 million in government funding. Eligible households can now borrow up to $15,000 at 0% interest to install solar panels, a battery, and other energy upgrades. No interest. No fees. Just a straightforward interest-free loan repaid over up to 10 years.

What is the NSW Home Energy Saver loan?

The Home Energy Saver is a government-backed loan designed to remove the biggest barrier to going solar: the cost on day one. Instead of paying thousands upfront, you borrow what you need, install the system, and repay it in manageable monthly instalments — at zero percent interest for the life of the loan.

Spread across 10 years, a $15,000 loan works out to around $125 per month. A typical NSW household spending $2,400 a year on electricity can expect annual savings of $1,500 to $2,000 once a 6.6 kW solar system and 10 kWh battery are installed. That means the system pays for itself well within the loan term — and starts building a surplus before you've finished repaying.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility for this program is intentionally broad. You likely qualify if you tick all four boxes:

  • Your home is in New South Wales
  • You own the property — both owner-occupiers and landlords qualify
  • Your combined household income is $210,000 or below
  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident

That income ceiling covers the vast majority of NSW homeowners. If you own your home and pay a power bill, you very likely qualify on paper. Keep in mind that the finance provider will run a standard responsible-lending assessment before approving any loan — meeting the scheme's eligibility criteria doesn't automatically guarantee loan approval.

What can the loan pay for?

Solar panels and battery storage are where most households get the strongest return, and that's where most customers use the loan. But the eligible product list is wider:

  • Solar PV systems — the backbone of any home energy upgrade
  • Battery storage — store your solar energy and use it after dark
  • Reverse-cycle air conditioning — efficient heating and cooling in one
  • Heat-pump hot water systems — dramatically cuts hot water running costs
  • EV chargers — charge your car at home on solar power
  • Switchboard upgrades — often required when adding solar or battery
  • Induction cooktops, ceiling fans, insulation, and double glazing

What about the $4,000 discount?

A separate $4,000 discount is described by the NSW Government as 'coming soon' and is not yet open for applications. When it does open, the income test is strict — it applies only if your combined household income is under $80,000, or if someone in the household holds an eligible concession card such as a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card.

Stack it with the federal battery rebate

The NSW Home Energy Saver loan can be used alongside the Commonwealth Cheaper Home Batteries program, which provides a direct discount on battery storage through accredited installers. The federal rebate reduces the upfront battery cost; the NSW loan finances the remainder at 0%. For some households, the two together can bring the out-of-pocket cost on installation day to near zero. If you've been watching battery prices and waiting for the right moment, a federal discount combined with a 10-year interest-free loan is a compelling case that the moment is now.

How the loan application works

One important thing to know: you can't apply to the lender directly. The scheme is installer-gated — only accredited suppliers can set up a loan application on your behalf. Here's how the process flows:

  • Contact us and we'll prepare your solar and battery proposal
  • We set up your loan application and send you a pre-filled link
  • You complete your personal and financial details and submit directly to the finance provider
  • The provider runs its own credit and responsible-lending assessment
  • On approval, we book and complete the installation
  • You repay over up to 10 years — with no interest charged

The loan approval decision rests with the lender. Our job is to make the path as clear and straightforward as possible.
